Emachines d620 replacing a broken power socket on the motherboard
Before beginning this project please make sure you have the appropriate skills with dismantling the laptop, and have the necessary skills in soldering electronic components.
If not please do not attempt this repair. Ask an electronics engineer to complete.
The motherboard can easily be damaged by poor quality repairs making the motherboard unrepairable. A replacement PCB costs over £100.
Be very careful with the display after removal, keep this away from the work area in suitable bag.
Before starting you will need:-
Power jack sockets are available on ebay for the approximate price of £3.95

A good sized worktable with good lighting.
A digital camera is very useful for recording cable layout and part numbers.
Commence dismantling by placing the laptop upside down on a rubber mat. Remove the battery.
Remove all the screws from the base 19 screws, place these in a plastic tray label this as base screws.
Locate the opening lug near the cooling fan prize this up with your thumbnail.
Remove the hard disk drive screws slide the hdd away from the socket carefully lift the drive away.

Remove the fan plug and two screws and place in the plastic the other plastic tray.
Remove the 4 or 5 cpu heat-sink (foxcon). Sometimes screw 5 is omitted.
Gently lift the heat sink and filter and slide away from the housing.
(if the heat sinkk has stuck to the cpu slightly twisting theheat sinkk helps to free).

Remove the screw holding the motherboard to the base.
The motherboard can now be removed.
.The broken socket can now be replaced
Use a solder sucker to de-solder the socket
Cut away the top of the socket with good quality miniature side cutters. Melting away the damaged plastic socket enables the pins to be removed without damage to the printed circuit board.
With care it is possible to replace the socket without de-soldering the earth sponge pad.
The new 6 pin socket should fit into the pcb with very little pressure.
Solder the 6 pins.
Clean up the pcb solder connections with a little cleaner on a cotton bud.
To reassemble please make sure you locate the wireless on/off switch in the middle of the button near the microphone/earpiece sockets.
