Acer Aspire 3050 works with windows 7.   EBay psu from China fails after 2 weeks.

My Grandson called round last Friday his laptop would not power up
The Acer Aspire 3050 was bought from Aria last September. Refurbished
With 30 day warranty.   It’s a very nice laptop with a nice bright display
It has given very good service and is constantly is use by all the family
And suffers a lot of rough and tumbles.
Several months ago Vista home was hit by lots of Trojans and virus
James did not have an install dvd of Vista home.  He reformatted the drive
And loaded Windows XP.
Although it worked ok with XP the drivers were not quite as good as Acer Vista.
A few weeks ago the Acer Aspire PSU began to give problems due to damage to
Flexing the 19v wire to the jack plug.
Eventually the psu failed completely.   James ordered a new Acer Aspire 3050
psu on Ebay for about £12 is arrived from China within a few days.
Everything worked ok for two weeks and then problems started the psu would
not charge the battery.

I checked the new psu from China and checked the voltage at the jack plug.
Should be 19V there was nothing a visual inspection looked ok.
I unplugged the mains cable from the psu and checked for 240V.
It was the mains cable the nasty 13 amp plug was a moulded type with
No access to a fuse the shape of the plug looks like a bicycle seat. Tiny fingers
Could easily wrap round past the shielded terminal pins the marking on the plug
CQC  CE  10A 250V.   This does not comply with British Standards.
If this was used in a rented property and someone got hurt the owner could be liable
For a £5000 fine or 6 months in prison.
I would advise anyone who purchases electrical items from China check the mains plug and make sure this complies to BSS.

After fitting a new mains cable James laptop is working fine.
I called round to see James last Saturday he had downloaded the free trial
Version of Windows 7.
By 10.30am he had download windows 7 made a DVD  and
Installed it on his Acer Aspire 3050 (1gb ram) laptop everything worked 100%
even his wireless connection logged in within seconds.
The power management the graphics worked far better than XP and the system
Worked a lot faster than Vista.

It’s a credit to James he is only just 11 years old.
On his main pc he had xp partition and a linux partition.
He decided to wipe linux and keep xp intact and try windows 7 on the linux
Windows 7 installed without a hitch he now has  a dual boot windows xp and windows 7.

Back soon
