'Under development creating your own apache webserver http://g6xfu.myftp.org.
My 11 year old Grandson asked the question how do I make my own internet web server?.
Good question
The bigest problem is not having a static IP address.
He downloaded Apache 2.2 for windows.  With help from the tutorials on youtube.
He managed to get Apache working as a local host.
His broadband cable supplier Virgin Media supply a 2meg modem with a ethernet output using an rg45 output port.
He has recently connected a 4 port belkin wireless router.
The problem was setting up the ports to work over the internet.
At first he tried setting up with 192.168,2,nn
After a bit of discussion 192.168 is the local host and suggested looking in google what is my ip address
and experimenting with this setting up port forwarding on the router.
I had an email from my Grandson I have my website working and asked me to enter the ip address in my browser.
Yes it was working.
We worked together trying to link a domain name to work with this.
After about an hour or two we had an account with noip.com
and a free domain name.
My grandson setup a similar config on my spare computer.
The server has been on test for 1 month without a hitch. with a temporary FREE NOIP domain name http://g6xfu.myftp.org/.
This test server has now been upgrade to Apache Xampp a truly great distro a very easy to install visit.  The server has been running since the end of Feb 2009.
Content has been added consisting of photographs albums, movie clips and a new addition to the family baby "Belle".  The video's really test the server http://g6xfu.myftp.org. Eventually a mirror site will be set up to compare the performance between home hosting with paid commercial hosts.

Apache2Triad looks quite interesting but but we had major problems with apache2triad, Xampp is far superior.

We need to investigate adding a control panel.  cpanel is brilliant but too expensive for experimental use.
A way to remotely ftp the site.  Adding msql and php.
And later moving away from windows to a linux platform perhaps my favourite mandriva 2008.

The next topic to be added the systems-edge.co.uk web site
is setting up your own apache server 2.2

In the mean time three very good articles worth reading  the first article.

Following on from the question how do I make my own Apache Web Server?

James (aged 11)  has created a tutorial on Youtube that includes topics not covered in many help pages.  The link for youtube is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR1QAwdtgGs
or seach for systemtalk

(1)   downloading xampp for windows and installing
(2)   Setting up a router for apache
(3)   Resolving the problem with dynamic IP address
(4)   Creating two free domain names
(5)   Installing a client  dynamic name server http://www.no-ip.com/
(6)   Create two virtual web sites on one apache installation
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/aR1QAwdtgGs" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/aR1QAwdtgGs</a>

My home server http://g6xfu.myftp.org  has been running now for over 4 months
Without any problems and is very stable.
The setup is very similar to the James except for security aspects. You must make sure you follow the guidelines securing apache xampp.
Remember the free domain name with  http://www.no-ip.com/ requires refreshing after 60 days this is accomplished very easily either responding to the email reminder from NO-IP or logging into your no-ip account and ticking the boxes.
If you wish to enhance your options you can register by paying a small fee to no-ip they will often email you with special discount offers.
Happy computing
